Fine Chocolate Industry Association Responds to Recent Reports on Heavy Metals in Chocolate

Expert Urges Context, Not Alarm, on Heavy Metal Reports

The Fine Chocolate Industry Association (FCIA) has issued a statement in response to renewed public concern over reports of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) levels in chocolate. The association urges consumers and the media to view these findings through the lens of scientific evidence and moderation rather than alarm.

FCIA Board Member Dr. Keith Ayoob, a pediatric nutritionist and long-time advocate for evidence-based health guidance, explains that both cadmium and lead occur naturally in many foods and that typical dietary exposure, especially from chocolate, poses no health risk when enjoyed in moderation.

Recent independent research supports this conclusion, confirming that fine chocolate remains safe for adults and children as part of a balanced diet. FCIA President Sander Wolf reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to responsible sourcing, quality control, and transparency across the chocolate industry.
